1. Describe Rowntree's exprience of crossing a flooded river on horseback.
Ans : Rowntree, during his stay in Assam, had forded a flooded river on horseback. It was with much difficulty that the egged on his steed and convinced it to plunge into the water. But as soon as it did so, RFowntree sleeped over and was left hanging on to its tail. He soon discovered that the tail could be used as rudder, for when he pushed the tail to the right, the horse veered to the left and vice versa. Thus after much difficulty and some tricky maneuvering, Rowntree and his horse finally made a safe landing on the other side of the river.
2. Relate Rowntree's exprience of floods in Assam.
Ans: Rowntree had two very distinct experinces regarding the floods of Assam. In the first instance, Rowntree and his horse were nearly washed away by a flooded river after he tried crossing the raging waters on horseback. After Rowntree had successfully persuaded his mount to plunge into the waters, he sleeped over its croup and was left hanging onto its tail. But he managed to save himself and his horse by using its tail as a rudder to manuver it onto safe land.
In the second instance, Rowntree experienced the onslaught of flood waters on the bamboo bridges built at the onest of cold weather. He observed that the flood waters washed away most of the bridges and those that managed to stand ; creacked and swayed alarmingly under a passing car. In such cases crossing were usually made in a mar boat. Even thogh this ingenious device worked well but it required constant adjustments to be amde to allow for the rise and fall of the rivers.
