THE HAPPY PRINCE [ class-IX, NCERT solution - moment ]

   

      1.       Why  do  the  courtiers  call  the  prince   ‘  The  Happy  Prince’?  is  he  really  happy ?  What  does  he  see  all  around   him?

Ans :  

          The  courtiers   call  the  prince   ‘  The  Happy  Prince  ‘  because  during  his  lifetime  sorrow   could  never   touch  him .  He  spent  his  life  happily  .  But  now  it  is  a  statue.  So  it  is  not  happy  now  because  as  he  is  placed  on  a  tail   column   he  can  see  the  ugliness  and  all  the  misery   of  his  city.  These  scenes   make  him   unhappy  and  he  weeps  in  sorrow  for  the  sufferers.

      2.       Why  does  the  happy  prince  send   a  ruby  for  the  seamstress?  What   does  the  swallow  do  in  the  seamstress’  house ?

Ans :    

        The  Happy  Prince  sees  that  the  little  boy  of  the  seamstress   is  ill.  His  mother  has  nothing   to  give  him  as   food   she  is  also   tired .  So  the  prince  sends  a  ruby  to  her   who  is  sewing   the  maid’s  gown   with  embroidery.  The  swallow   picks  up  the  ruby   from  the  hilt  of  the  sword   of  the  prince   and  places   it  near   the  thimble   of  the  lady  tailor.  He  also  fans  the  ill   boy   and  then   returns  to  the  prince.

      3.       For   whom  does   the  prince   send   the  sapphires  and  why?

Ans : 

        The  prince  sends  a  sapphire   to  the  young  playwright   who  becomes  unable   to  write  his  play  because   of  extreme  cold.  He  has  no  money  to  buy  firewood  and  warm  himself   up.  There  is  no  fire  in  his  grate .  He is  hungry  and  weak. 

                                          The   prince  sends  another  sapphire   to  the  match  girl  whose   matches  have  fallen   into  the  gutter .  she  had   neither   shoes  nor  stokings. Her  father   will  beat  her.  So  to  save  her  he  sends   the  swallow   with  a  sapphire   for  the  girl. 

      4.       What   does   the  swallow  see  when  it  flies   over  the  city?

Ans: 

       When  the  swallow  flies  over  the  city  he  sees  rich  people   making   merry  in  their  beautiful   houses.  And  beggars   are  seen  sitting  at  their  gates .  He  sees  the  hungry,  pale  faces  of  the  children  being  driven  away  by  the  guards  into  the  rain.

      5.       Why  did  the   swallow   not  leave  the   prince  and  go  to  Egypt ?

Ans :

     The   swallow  did  not  leave  the  prince  and  go  to  Egypt  because   'The  Happy  Prince'  has  become  blind  as  the  sapphires  has  been  plucked   out  from  his  eyes .  In  such  a  miserable   condition   the  swallow  could  not  leave  the  prince   alone.  The  bird  felt  pity  for  the  noble  prince.  So  he  decided   to  remain  with  the  prince.

      6.       What  are  the  precious   things   mentioned   in  the  story ?  Why  are  they   precious ?

Ans: 

      The   precious   things   mentioned  in  the  story  are  the  heart  of  The  Happy  Prince   and  the  little  swallow .  They  are  precious  because   they  sacrificed  themselves   for  others  well -  being .  They   are  self  - less. They   never  thought   of  their  comfort  but  tried   to  comfort  others.
