III.    Answer  these  questions  in 30 – 40 words  :

       1.       Why  did  Aurangzeb  ban  the  playing  of  the  Pungi ?

Ans  :  Aurangzeb  banned  the  playing  of  the  pungi  because  it  made  a  shrill  and  unpleasant  sound  .

       2.       How  is  a  shehnai  different  from  a  pungi  ?

      Ans  :  The  pungi  with  its  belly  like  part  makes  a  shrill  and  unpleasant  sound  . But  a  shehnai  is  made  of  natural  hollow  stem  that  is  longer  and  broader  than  the  Pungi  .  It  makes  melodies  sound  .

       3.       Where was  the  shehnai  played  traditionally  ?  How  did  Bismillah  Khan  change  this  ?

Ans  :  Traditionally  shehnai  was  played  in  temples  and  weddings  . Bismillah  Khan  gave  the  shehnai  a new  dimension  by  adding  ragas  to  its  its  melody  .

       4.       When  and  how  did  Bismillah  Khan  get  his  big  break  ?

Ans  :  Bismillah  Khan  got  a  break  when  the  All  Indian  Radio  opened  its  station  in  Lucknow  in  1938  .  He became  the  shehnai  player  there  from  the  opening  of  the  centre .

       5.       Where  did  Bismillah  Khan play  the  shehnai  on  15  August  1947  ?  Why  was the event  historic  ?

Ans  :  On  15^th  August  ,  1947  Ustad  Bismillah  Khan  greeted  the  nation  with his  Shehnai  from  the  Red  Fort  . He  poured out  his  heart  in  raag  Kafi .

The  event  was  historic  because  it  was  India’s  first  day  of  Independence  .

      6.       Why  did  Bismillah  Khan  refuse  to  start  a  shehnai  school  in  the  U.S.A. ?

Ans  :  Bismillah  Khan  refused  to  start  a  shehnai  school  in  the  U.S.A . because  he  would  not  find  the  home  environment  there  .  There  was  no  Ganga  there  .  he  could  not  live  without  the  holy  river  Ganga  .

      7.       Find  at  least  two  instances  in  the  text  which  tell  you  that  Bismillah  Khan loves  India  and  Benaras  ?

Ans  :  Bismillah  Khan  refused  to  stay  in  the  U.S.A.  saying  that  there  was  not  Ganga there  .  He  loved  India  and  Benaras  on  the  bank  of  the  Ganga  .  He  said  that  when  he  was  in  a  foreign  land  he  kept  thinking  for  India  and  when  he  was  in  Mumbai  he  kept  thinking  for  Benaras  and  the  Ganga .
