1. Which   country   or   countries   do  you   think  “ the  Northland “  refers  to ?

Ans:  The  Northland   refers   to  countries  that   are  in  the  extreme   north,  just  near   the  North   Pole. Days  are  short   and   nights   are  very  long  there.

 2. What   did   Saint   Peter   ask  the  old  lady  for ?   what   was   the  lady’s    reaction  ?    

Ans :   Saint  Peter   asked   the  old  lady  for  a  cake  as  he  was  hungry.  But  the  lady   was  very     selfish .  so   she  made  a  smaller  cake  but  even  then  she  did not   give  it  because  it  looked   big  to  her .  she  again  made  another   even   smaller.  Still  she  could  not  give  it  to  the  Saint.

3.How  did   he  punish  her ?

Ans : He   punished   her  by  changing   her  into  a  woodpecker.

4.How  does  the  wood  pecker   get   her   food ?

Ans : The   woodpecker   gets   her   food  by   boring   and  boring  dry  and  hard  wood.

5. Do  you  think   that   the  old  lady  would   have  been  so   ungenerous   if  she  had   known   who   Saint   Peter   really   was  ?   what  would  she  have  done  then.

Ans :  The  lady   was   selfish   and  greedy. So  it  is  difficult   to  say  what   she  would   have  done  had  she  know   who   Saint  Peter  really   was.  She  might  have  given   him   a   very   small   cake.

6. Is  this  a  true  story ?  which  part   of  this  poem   do   you   feel  is  the  most  important ?

Ans :  This  is  not   a  true   story  but  a  legend.  The  third  stanza   that  proves   that   it  is  unbelievable.  It  is  the  most  important.

7.  What  is  a  legend   ?  why  is  this  poem   called  a  legend ?

Ans  :  A   legend   is  a  story  that   rolls  down   from   the  past .   there  lies  little  truth   in  legends.  The  poet   himself   calls   it  a  legend   and  the  story  narrated  in  the  poem  cannot  be  ture.  So  it  is  a  legend.

8. Write   the  story   of ‘ A  legend   of  the  North  land’  in  about  ten  sentences.

Ans :  A  woman  in  Northland  was  very   selfish .  she  angered   Saint  Peter   one day .  Saint  Peter   came  to  her  cottage  when  she  was  banking   cakes.  He  was  hungry  after  the  day’s  journey   and  fasting .  he  asked  the  lady  to  give  him  a  cake.  The  lady  found  her  cakes  too  big   to  be  given .  so  she  made  a  small  cake.  But  that   seemed  big .  so  she   again  baked   another   even  smaller . this  time  too   she  could  not  give   the  cake  to  Saint  Peter . Saint  Peter   saw  that   she  was   unworthy  to   remain  as  a  human  being.  So  he  changed    her  into  a woodpecker.  She  now  lives   in  wood.  She  makes   holes   on  hard   wood  in   search  of  food.

II . 1.  Let’s  look   at   the  words  at  the  end  of  the  second   and  fourth  lines  , viz ,  ‘snows’ and  ‘clothes’,  ‘true’   and  ‘you’ , ‘below’  and ‘know’.  We  find  that  ‘snows’ rhymes  with  ‘clothes’  ‘true’  with  ‘you’  and  ‘below’  rhymes  with  ‘know’                                                                                                Find  more  such  rhyming  words.
